There’s an app for that…

Auburn Engineering students in the Department of Computer Science and Software Engineering are among those developing applications for Apple’s iPhone. Students in CSSE faculty member Richard Chapman’s class are creating apps that include a heart rate monitor that incorporates the iPhone’s microphone, a location-based pedometer that uses the phone’s GPS and a program that helps users keep track of their medications.

“The iPhone is an important part of the wireless landscape, where the future of computing is increasingly proving to be mobile devices,” says Chapman. “Because Auburn has the only wireless engineering program in the nation, our students are bestequipped for jobs in this area.”

Many students are also developing games for smartphones because they are an easier interface and only use the phone’s screen, whereas other apps require interaction with parts of the phone, such as the microphone or the GPS. This hands-on experience sets students in the wireless engineering field apart as they graduate and step out into the job market. Representatives from Apple have already made visits to campus, in both seminar and recruiting settings.
